About us

GFU Maschinenbau GmbH - Precision in Pipe End Forming

GFU Maschinenbau GmbH is a globally active manufacturer of special-purpose machinery that specializes exclusively in the development, optimization, and industrialization of pipe end forming processes.

Our goal is to advance the technology behind complex forming tasks so that they can be transformed into efficient, high-precision, and robust production processes. Whether as a stand-alone machine, a fully automated production line, or integrated into existing manufacturing systems.

With over 300 GFU production lines installed worldwide, we make a global contribution to modern manufacturing technology in the energy sectors, from OCTG applications to hydrogen technologies, automotive and construction.

Calibration and Reducing Technologies for OCTG & Line Pipe

GFU swaging and calibration solutions ensure maximum dimensional accuracy, optimized roundness, and reproducible quality.

Robust machine designs—such as closed O-frame structures with multiple centering clamping systems—ensure process stability in demanding OCTG and line pipe applications.

Upsetting – Material precisely where it is needed

In upsetting, pipe material is axially compressed to selectively increase wall thicknesses.

This results in weight-optimized, high-strength components with a homogeneous grain structure.

Advantages:

  • Near-net-shape manufacturing

  • Reduced material usage

  • Replacement of welded or multi-part solutions

  • High strength and process reliability

Technology for today’s and tomorrow’s energy systems

GFU technologies combine proven solutions for oil & gas and line pipe with new requirements from the hydrogen energy sector.

Especially in the field of high-pressure steel vessels, our forming processes make a significant contribution to the safe and economic implementation of the energy transition.

High-Speed End-Forming

A proprietary GFU development for rotationally symmetric components, in which the entire geometry is formed in a single die.

The process enables high forming ratios, short cycle times, and tight tolerances.

Typical applications:

  • Shock absorbers

  • Airbag gas generators

  • Rotor shafts

  • High-pressure hydrogen tanks

  • Other safety-critical precision components

Flexibility in every project phase

GFU implements projects as:

  • Manufacturing concepts

  • Forming proposals and simulations

  • Prototype manufacturing

  • Stand-alone machine

  • Complete production line

  • Integration into existing production facilities

All systems are modular, automated, and customizable to meet specific customer requirements.

Why GFU?

  • Over 30 years of experience in custom machine manufacturing

  • Global installation base and service network

  • High degree of vertical integration and engineering expertise

  • Precise, robust, and easy-to-maintain machines

The tube is held axially by at least two clamping jaws during forming. A guided retraction ring or mandrel is pushed into/over the tube and in this way expands/reduces the workpiece. GFU's preferred closed design of the machine housing ensures:

  • Durability of the forming line

  • Consistently high precision of the components

  • Good accessibility of the tools

  • Best concentricity due to external routing of the tools

For necessary multiple operations, we offer an optional automatic tool changer.

Upsetting Presses - Drill- and Casing-Pipes

Upsetting is based on the principle that two die segments enclose the partially heated tube and the material is then upset in the axial direction by 1 or 2 punches. Both tube and solid materials can be partially upset. Contours are possible via the tool geometry.

  • Robust design and guaranteed long service life time of the forming system

  • Consistently high reproducibility and precision of the formed parts

  • Easy access to tools

  • Fast tool change times by using of changing devices

  • Positioning accuracies of the forming tools in the range of 0.1 mm

  • Forming programs/recipes are stored in the PLC and parameters can be changed via the HMI

  • Positioning control of the forming tools with overlaying pressure control system

  • 6 jaws clamping system (centric clamping independent of pipe diameter)

  • Automatic Tool lubrication system, programmable via HMI

  • Tool temperature control system

  • Process Data tracking available

  • Central machine lubrication system

  • Siemens S7-1500 CPU and HMI (TP Series)

  • Bosch Rexroth Hydraulic Power Unit

High-Speed End-Forming

Developed by GFU the High-Speed End-Forming process is based on the

spinning/flow-forming process principle. The main difference is that the tool

is not a roller which runs off a specific shape, but a pot-shaped tool in which

the entire course of the shape is incorporated. The components that can be

produced by this process must be rotationally symmetrical.
